Ineffectual interspecies protection
early last winter i installed a large panel stitched with 175 hawthorns, using red thread, onto an ash tree. for earlier images and to follow the process of this project, look at these posts: here, and here and here
14 months later, the panel is still intact, the thread has faded, the thorns remain. the tree has not yet been infected with the emerald ash borer. it will happen. the cotton panel, my hands, the thorns; these are inefficient in the face of an invasive species. to stop these quiet violences. to stop gender and environmental violence.
borders are fluid and porous. species (and viruses) move between bodies. the biological, social and political are intertwined. the scale of my heart is not enough.
i continue to stitch ash borer lines into used cotton bedsheets.
